Toooo many games competing for top spot, so in no particular order these are 5 that stole hours of my life: Alpha Centauri X-Wing FFVII Champ Manager Baldurs Gate Gears of War 1-3 (guilty pleasure one, had so much fun with the co-op/online with friends!)
So yeah maybe not the best games, and to be fair the list will change every 5 minutes, but certainly 5 games i sunk loads of time into and had fun with!

Too difficult to put 5 in order so mine are all joint 1st.
Final Fantasy 7 - ps1 Metal Gear Solid - ps1 Football Manager / CM (all of them combined probably have more hours put into them than I put into my entire time in education) SOCOM - ps2 (very first online experience) Spy Hunter - spectrum zx

Don't think I could put them in order but:
Elite (Spectrum 48K) - the first game that kept me up all night. Still a very impressive piece of programming, and endless gameplay squashed into a ridiculously small chunk of data. Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast then Gamecube) - played every night for hours even after the game was ruined by the action replay gizmo that allowed twats to ruin entire game saves. Made pals I still play online with today.
World of Warcraft (PC) - couldn't leave it out as I've probably spent more time on it than any other game. Massive ever-expanding game world with no shortage of things to do, even for anti-social non-raiders like me.
Final Fantasy VII (PS1) - the first game to provoke an emotional reaction from me. Yes, I nearly cried when they killed her.
Red Dead Redemption (360) - a game world so immersive and authentic you almost don't need a game to go with it. Why aren't there more cowboy games? And the second one to make me get emotional. If you played it, you know the part.

1. Double Dragon 2 on the NES simple and fun would probs by a NES now just to place this again
2. Street fighter 2 on the SNES still the best beatemup ever
3. Final Fantasy 7 on the PS1 untill this i didnt believe it was possible to create a game so massive and involving still play it on the vita
4. Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 the first of its kind in terms of stealth great characters and storyline Snake Snake Snaaaaaaaaaake
5. The Last Of Us on the PS3/PS4 this maybe a true breakthrough in 1 player gaming and will be the benchmark for any story driven game in the future
honourable mentions to resident evil 4 on PS2 and the legacy of kain series i still have my fingers crossed they will make more of these

Guys, this is REALLY difficult... I had to write down a list, and the only fair way is to say which games my choices beat, so that they could get a special mention! Here goes...
Sam n' Max Hit The Road - the first solving game (officially, a graphic adventure video game) with genuine humour, that I was playing in the time when Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island were popular. And this was back in the day when there was no internet. You either got the answer to a clue from many hours of trial and error, from a friend who had done it, or if you were lucky, from a cheat explained to you in the monthly computer magazine! Beating: castlevania, zelda (ocarina of time) & Super Mario (sorry!)
Star Wars: Force Unleashed - one of the first games that I just loved playing different roles (good vs. evil) in and just re-running the levels over and and over. A rare platinum for me. Beating: golden axe (first arcade game I played), Star fox and Need for Speed Underground 2
NBA Live '95 - being a basketball fan growing up, 100's of hours were spent getting Jimmy Jackson and Jamal Mashburn for the Dallas Mavericks to pull up for the 3 pointer. First proper sports game which FIFA 10 came close to competing (when Roschinsky could actually play on the pitch and I dedicated control of only him), but not enough to win. Beating: midnight club 3, FIFA 10 & SSX
Assassins Creed II - probably my 3rd real free-roaming game, but being able to run through the streets of Florence (lived there for a short period a few years before playing the game), was amazing. And LOVED playing as the barber in the PvP - my intro into the online gaming world. Beating: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, Call of Duty & Batman: Arkham Asylum
Goldeneye - a popular choice, but played it so much over the years. You knew it was always the one game that every mate knew how to play... Just pass them the controller!! Beating: Deus Ex, Streetfighter II & Mario kart
Probably not a standard selection, but I'm encouraged to hear that The Last of Us is that good (waiting to start playing the copy I bought), and as I'm sure with us all interested in hearing which ones that slipped through our own net didn't end up on people's list (I was always told that Unchartered was brilliant).
Great fun choosing though!

Nice list, a few there I would certainly agree with, Sam n' Max was brilliant, been playing Grim Fandango again recently and it's brought back my love for adventure games

I can't BELIEVE that I forgot to include Shogun: Total War in my top 5 assessment. I don't know if it would have made it in or not, but I can't tell you how many hours I spent playing the different clans of Japan... A great strategy game!
