New stories are a bit short... They are a challenge on highest level though. You basically need to buy 3 new legendary armour with max 33 light and then wait for Xur on Friday... He's gonna be a busy chap. Then upgrade your exotics... I'm not sure how the new legendary/exotic light levels work. The stuff you buy is light level 33 and the exotics are 36 AFAIK. So why does that equate to light level 31? The old raid gear (light 30) and old exotic (light 30) meant you were light level 30 in total, so is there some change here? OK, this reddit post gives some details. It's still strange though how each item's light level doesn't match the character light level as it seemed to before... Vendor gear will be +33 lights
Exotics will +36 lights
this means that if the current light needed to levelup is kept (+11 per level) ie.
120 is 30
131 is 31
142 is 32.
4 vendor gears will make you go to 4x33 = 132 lights => level 31 but it will cost you 72 ascendant shards.
3 vendors gears + 1 exotics => 3 x 33 + 36 = 135 => still level 31 but it will "only" cost 1 exotic shard + 48 ascendant shard (one of your vendor gear don't need to be maxed out)
so it may sound obvious but it is better to go the exotics way to get to +31 quicker with less ascendant shards.

Great post Andy.. thanks. They probably had to realign the light values to make the 31 progression work. I'll definitely go the 3 vanguard and 1 exotic route.

Since sodding Hawkmoon continues to elude me, and since my unused Last Word has been dismantled for a shard, I thought I'd pop along to the QM to pick up his only handgun, The Devil You Don't.
It is indeed the devil I didn't - I didn't buy because it only has a 5-shot clip, and no perk to increase that. Two words - un-believable.

Indeed, I have the "Devil you Don't" mostly because I was after a handgun and foolishly assumed it would be the "Devil you know" just upgraded.... Id be interested if there was another "non raid" one out there - at the moment im levelling thorn with has the disadvantage of being an exotic but it is very good (I managed to con underwurldchris into helping me with the last part ) and has a clip size of 9 + send it. If anyone would like some assistance with the last part, ill happily help out just jump into party chat when im online.

I may buy one anyway in the hope that Bungie patch it - they upgraded Thorn from 6 to 9 if I recall, but I'll never have that gun as the bounty involves pvp, and I never go there.
