Having ran a lot of trials this weekend trying to get people their doctrine and normally do at least one run a week I've realised that there are a few simple things (and a few harder things) that people can do to help squeeze out a few more wins to get that top loot.
I will caveat all of this by saying that I am by no means a pvp pro. If krafty etc are the destiny equivalents of Barcelona in the champions league then I am somewhere mid table in the championship. The tips I am passing on are things I've learnt from trials over the past year. A lot of it was explained to me whilst playing with Rubenov, JustGotWicked and DrDrizzay101. A few of you guys have had Mercury runs with them and know they are legit top tier pvpers.
So onto the actual tips.
1. Maximise your loadout.
There are certain weapons that are top tier in the meta at the minute. Those that always seem to wreck you in the crucible. To get the most out of those weapons can take practise. So the best thing you can do is practise, or use a weapon you are comfortable with. Don't try to learn how to use a new weapon in trials. It won't end well. Stick with what you know.
Now you've got your primary you have to decide upon your secondary. This secondary needs to cover the shortfalls of your primary. For example, if I am using MIDA I won't use a sniper as my secondary unless it is a ridiculously sniper heavy map (pantheon / frontier). If anyone gets in short range they will beat me because MIDA is rubbish in close quarters. I've recently started to run MIDA with sidearm. It's saved me a lot as the sidearm will melt people if they get close. So, if you run with a scout as primary make sure your secondary is good at close range (shotgun / sidearm). If you run with pulse you will need a close range secondary. If you are using a handcannon or auto rifle you want something with a bit more range as your secondary.
Heavy is a no brainier. Rockets, rockets and rockets. If this means jumping into a menu to select Truth before heavy round then do it. HMG are good but 1 rocket is faster and easier to use.
2. Armour selection
Your priority should be to keep your light level as close to 310 as you can whilst achieving the following.
- get intellect to 300 or as close as you can
- get discipline to 300 or as close as you can (perfect setup is for both these to be at 300.
- armour chest piece that provides extra armour for the subclass you are using.
- gauntlets with reload speed for primary you use
- boots with extra ammo for rockets
- fast revive (absolutely priceless if you know you will be reviving people a lot or being revived a lot)
- exotic armour that gives grenade on spawn (grenades are important. See later tips).
3. Know your role in the fireteam.
Be honest with yourself and ask where you rank amongst your teammates. Are you on their level, are you better than them, are you worse than them. If you are better then you should be calling the plays and explaining who should hold which part of the map. If you are the weakest your most important job is to not die. You should shadow one of your teammates. Support them however you can just stay close to them. But not so close that one grenade will take you both out. Shoot at what they shoot at. Push forward when they do.
4. Map knowledge
Learn the maps, this will only come through playing. And playing trials is the best way to learn a map. You will quickly learn where all the sniper lanes are. Where most firefights take place, where good routes are to flank. Most importantly learn where gives you the most cover. Never be far from cover. The less of you in the open the less likely it is you will get killed by a sniper. Www.destinytrialsreport.com has an amazing resource. They have call out maps. Look over them. Learn what each area is called. Being able to say exactly where someone is in as few words as possible is priceless. Both your teammates will know where you mean and can then act accordingly.
The secret to checking your surroundings whilst behind cover is to sit down. Yep, press down on the dpad then use the 3rd person camera to look around. This keeps you in cover and let's you see where those pesky snipers are without getting shot in the face.
Use your radar, always. Learn to understand where the red marker means in relation to your surroundings. If it appears behind you call it out, you are about to be taken roughly from behind and no one likes that!
5. Choose your engagement
So you are doing your job, you are alive, you are staying in cover and you see a single person coming towards you. Ask yourself, if I pop out now am I going to kill them before they get me. If the answer is no then don't go for it. If the answer is yes then tell your teammates and go for it. If you have been shadowing one of your teammates he now knows what you are about to do and can come back you up. 2 people shooting 1 target is much better than 1 person shooting 1 target. However if you are on your own then get the odds in your favour as best as you can. Initiate the engagement with a grenade, pop out and throw then get immediately back into cover. If you cause damage to them pop out and finish them. Make sure you use a weapon appropriate to the range you are engaging them.
If you take damage before you've fired your first shot get back into cover. You will lose that fight. Your opponent already has you in their sights and is hitting you. Fall back and recover. Tell your teammates and again they will support you. If you survive well done, you have not died and are still able to find a new spot to hang back. At this point your opponent will get blood thirsty and come after you to finish you off. You have the advantage at this point. You can control the engagement, you know roughly where they are coming from, you should be ready to shoot at where they are going to come from. If you have a grenade get ready to throw.
6. Oh shit, what if I die here.
You've pushed an opponent. They've ran off bravely and you have given chase. Firstly stop! Think. If I get killed now, is my orb in an area of the map my team control. If the answer is no back away. Regoup with your team. In the event you do die, become useful. Make call outs. The guy who killed you has a red outline. Tell your team his movements. Is he guarding your orb, is he pushing them. Is he using a shotgun, is he sniping, what primary is he using.
7. Sensible super use
You are a self res warlock. Do not waste that res. Is someone sniping your orb? Don't bother, you will be dead before your animation is done. Is there 2 or 3 self res on your team. De conflict who is going to res. If you are going to use it get spamming your grenade. Grab revives. Melee. Just stay alive and cause as much damage as you can.
You are a nova bombing space magician. Save it for when you see 2 or 3 people grouped. Or to shut down another super. Or if it is a 1v1 and you are the last man standing.
You are a storm calling warlock. Pop it and push forward hard. Make sure your team mates are aware and that they follow you closely so they can grab your orbs and help when it runs out.
You are a fist of havocing Titan. Use this to shut down other supers and to win those last man 1v1s. If you see a group of 2 and you are close enough then go for it.
You are a hammer throwing Titan, do exactly the same as storm trance. Pop it and chase them down with teammates following.
You are a bubble Titan - change your subclass mofo!
You are a blade dancing hunter. Blink and get in close to groups. Be aware that melee is massively affected by lag. Any lag in the match and it can take up to 3 hits to kill someone. What should be an easy 3 man multi kill becomes a lot harder and normally ends in a 1v1 trade.
You are a gunslinging hunter. Do as the hammers and storm trance do.
You are a nightstalker. Stop those supers at range. Or tether groups for easy kills.
For all supers do not use if you are weak and injured. You will die before you can make use of it. Talk to teammates so that all 3 of you don't waste a super in one round. Call out when you are going to use yours. Also listen for opponent supers. If you hear one call it out and run / hide / get ready to throw grenades and team shoot.
8. Stay calm.
Do not tilt. Losing fights you should be winning is annoying. However getting angry will lead to bad decisions and puts added pressure on people. If you are going to tilt put yourself on mute till you calm down. Best way to stay calm is to ask yourself what you did wrong, what mistakes did the team make. What can we do to fix it. Unfortunately lag happens. We just have to get over it. As annoying as it is. People tea bag to get you to tilt. It is a legitimate strategy to get the opponent riled up. How many times have you been tea bagged and wanted to hunt the guy down and do it back? Exactly. Ignore it and if you want tea bag them back once you've won 5 rounds.
9. Be aware of your teammates movement.
You need to know what each other are doing. If one person is going to push the others need to know. So they can support and flank. If you are running off to get special. Let the team know. All 3 teammates should be close enough that they can support each other quickly.
10. Orb control.
You've killed 1 enemy. Control his orb. You outnumber the other team. You don't need to push to hard. Get control of the orb and decide from there. You should always have at least one person defending the orb. Remember, the dead guy can see you. If you move away He will be telling his mates just like you would.
You've killed 2 enemies. At this point no one should push. Hang back with the orbs. If it comes to capturing the control point you outnumber the guy 3-1. He will lose. As boring as it is patience will win. The reason streamers win so many 1v3s is because people defend the orbs while one pushes. This then becomes 1v2. If you stay together and defend those orbs you will win
You are defending an orb that you know is a self res warlock. If you have a super to shut him down then be ready. Best one to use is Titan smash. If you don't have a super be ready with sniper or shotgun.
11. Communicate and team shoot.
Keep talking to each other. Try to make every engagement a 2v1. 9 times out of 10 the 2 will win. The ones you lose will be against people in the top 1% at the top of their game.
12. It's ok to lose.
Yes it sucks. But it's not the end of the world. Learn from it. Save the video if you want. Watch it back. Learn from your mistakes. The more you play the more experience you will have and you will become more comfortable in situations you once struggled in.
i hope some of you find this useful and I am always happy to run trials with anyone and give feedback or answer any questions. Just make sure I'm not tired as I'm a grumpy fucker whilst tired.
Also if anyone else has any tips they want to pass on feel free. I am still learning and developing my trials play style each week and always looking for ways to improve
