Sony allegedly, according to some developer, working on a 4k console, according to this article. It'll happen eventually anyway, but does it need to happen now? I see no need for it personally. Somewhere along the line rivalry went from 'my graphics are better then yours' to 'my resolution and framerate are higher than yours' when neither has sod all to do with gameplay. Do players demand better graphics or is it just the industry telling us we do? Personally I couldn't give a toss about frame rates as long as a game runs smoothly. 1080p, 1080i, 720p, I bet most players couldn't even tell the difference - on two big screens side by side, maybe, but put someone in front of one telly playing a fast-paced action game at 720p, tell them it's 1080p, and they wouldn't know. Discuss.

Does it need to happen now? No I don't think so, I'd say the majority of people don't have a 4K telly (that's me saying that no stats to back me up) that said 4K is beautiful I'd have had one by now if it weren't for my Mrs going on about our telly being fine, which it is.
I think the take up on 4K will dictate how quickly it happens. In the meantime I'll have to wait for my telly to blow up.

Well I'd say you're certainly right about how many peeps have a 4k telly, in fact I'd bet it's a small minority right now. My 1080 telly is still in warranty, I'm still well impressed by some blu-ray video quality, so I'm in no desperate hurry to upgrade anything.

Of course we need it now and yes I do have a 4k TV.The difference in picture quality is massive.

What we need now is better and more varied games, not the same old stuff again and again in higher resolution. The games industry is as stale as the cinema industry. Sadly we're breeding a generation of gamers who'll think 'if it isn't photo-realistic it's shit'. There are idiots who think like that already.

I agree we do need a more varied approach to games, but let it be as well presented as possible.

I have fairly recently bought a new TV, but due to having no 4k sources I bought a HD TV.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony are doing this to encourage the uptake of 4k and getting people to buy a new TV as much as getting people to update to a new console.
I'm with pigmagnet though. I couldn't care less if the game is in 720 or full HD. If the game is awesome, it could be in SD for all I care.

Well logically thinking ps4 has been out 2 and a half years. this console generation was set to last about 8 years and it takes 4-5 years of development to build a new console. so if the rumours are true they may well be talking about the ps5. just my thought on the subject..

In the past Sony has also done a redesign of the current console and brought out a slim version. They did this with the PS2 and PS3. Maybe this time Sony is thinking of upgrading the graphics or other parts of the console and asking for Developer opinion to see if it will be worth it to Sony.
It will not be for a couple of years at least so lets not get too excited.

I don't see the point in this. The PS4 struggles to get games running at 1080p 30fps most the time, never mind hitting 60fps.
For a game to be 4k it will have to make massive cutbacks on other things. If they make the 4.5 more powerful to do this where will PS4 users stand. 4.5 games will still have to work on it (just not at 4k). Are developers going to even want to put the extra effort in to make 4k an option? So many textures to improve and other optimisations.
Or will it just be an up scaled image?
4k isn't going to become the mainstream standard during this current generation. Adding a semi update is going to confuse the hell out of the more casual audience.
Save 4k for next generation and build the console to be able to hit it. Not some half baked attempt.
