I wasn't planning on any game purchases until No Man's Sky but have just seen this is out next week, and I just fancy a bit of mental old-school blasting. So it'll be me playing Doom and all you sheep playing Uncharted 4.
Currently about £32 at Simply Games.

I’m either growing out of gaming or simply over run with two many of them, but I can’t seem to get my teeth into anything that gives any lasting appeal, or… it could be that there’s nothing left that I’ve not seen before so the novelty’s worn off, I keep buying new ones play for a bit get my fix then look for something new, I need locking in a room with a shivering turkey.
Might get Doom might not, the first blew my mind on pc I’d never imagined anything like it, this one looks so real It will probably give me cardiac arrest.

I’m either growing out of gaming or simply over run with two many of them, but I can’t seem to get my teeth into anything that gives any lasting appeal, or… it could be that there’s nothing left that I’ve not seen before so the novelty’s worn off. I'm in the same boat. Don't worry, it's not us, it's the industry that's gone stale. There's little that interests me now. I've been an avid home-format gamer for 31.5 years (I can date it exactly from getting a Speccy for Xmas 84). For that reason alone I can claim that there isn't much I haven't seen game-wise in one incarnation or another. Nowadays I like to think I'm 'discerning'. In this age of photorealism you have to make an effort now not to be swayed by pretty graphics - it's really all some AAA games have to offer. I like the look of Doom precisely because it's old school - in a jazzy new skin, yes, but from the vids I've seen they look to have caught the right spirit. I might even have a look at the multiplayer if it's the drop-in drop-out quick blast of mayhem sort, and not teams capturing flags. The games industry is the same as the film industry now in that it's driven by commercial gain and AAA games are expected to have whopping budgets and hundreds of developers and big name actors for cut scenes. Some gamers now won't even look at a game if it isn't made from that mould. That is reason enough why No Man's Sky must succeeed (and will) - it's the nearest this generation will get to solitary coders making hit games in their bedroom. I could go on.

You could go on but please give it up.The film industry now is more or less shite. The games industry is really just at the start.I could name 50 absolute classic games in the last 20 years can you name 50 absolute classic films in the last 20 years?Obviously this is subjective but I would be interested in the film list.Your point about commercial gain is indeed valid but I think that is more to do with what the majority of people want and not old bastards like us.

The games industry is really just at the start. I don't see how you can say that about an industry that's 40-50 years old. You might conceivably claim it's a 'golden age' right now but even that's debatable given that there's virtually no originality now. When you've got hardware in living rooms capable of displaying photo-realistic graphics, there's nowhere else to go apart from 'even more photo-realistic in higher definition'. The industry is just coasting, churning out (for the most part) the same old product, just with better graphics; like the film industry.

The games industry appears to be even more risk averse than Hollywood/western film. Take a look at the biggest games of the last few months to a year and they are nearly all repackaged versions of older games. Fallout 4 is essentially the same game as Fallout 3, various shooters are all the same - take your pick: even my kids noticed how similar Battlefront and Plants Vs Zombies are (same controls, same ideas underneath the bonnet). Even Bloodborne is the same as Demon's Souls (which itself was the same as an earlier game that no-one played). Things are being done well, now (mostly) but there is still nothing new. Even No Man's Sky is basically Elite.

I played Doom for a bit. Around 90 mins, for sticklers. Its... alright. I gather it's quite divisive. The least important aspect first - the graphics. They're okay, nothing better. Mars doesn't look anywhere near as good as it does in Destiny, for a start. Audio I don't like. It sounds as though it's coming through cotton wool. Movement is very floaty - you don't feel like a man running with guns, you feel like a camera floating round at exactly the same height. A little bit of head-bob would have helped. And perhaps some grunting.
I had reasonably good fun - things explode when shotgunned up close, as they should, and the chainsaw cuts things to satisfactory bits. When things take so much damage they glow blue, and if you run up to them and melee at this point you get a gory death animation and extra health - but I can't decide whether it interrupts the flow of gameplay or not. To summarise - I'll carry on, but if I'd played a demo first I doubt I'd have bought it. It might feel better when I get more weapons and variety of thingies to kill.

mmm, been toying with getting this, but not a glowing review I must admit, I just fancied some non complicated guts and blood gameplay I suppose..
Might have to wait till it goes in a sale in a month or so.

Well, I gather it's going down rather well, and the things I don't like about it don't seem to be bothering anyone else. But I think I'll be cutting my losses and selling it on. I'll see, I might give it another go tonight.
