Im looking to upgrade my cpu, what are your views on AMD CPUs vs Intels? Are the AMD's capable? Is it Intel all the way? It has been a long time since I've dabbled with AMD way back when the had s chip called the Athlon, which actually was a great rig for its time.

Intel all the way. AMD haven't produced anything to rival Intel except in the GPU department. If you want to go AMD you'll need a new motherboard. The one that everybodies says is the best for gaming is the I7 6700K. Its pricey though at about 300 quid.

Was leaning towards i5s as the i7 are a bit pricey don't really want to spend 300 notes on the cpu alone, probably going to need a new mobo as I'm sure my 2500k is a different socket. Will look at AMD but what should I be looking at?
Also GTX 970 any good? Would two of those at 300 quid represent good bang for bucks? Is it worthwhile having two? Or better spending the doh of a single gpu?
I'm currently running Intel Sandybridge i5-2500K Unlocked Core i5 Quad-Core Processor (3.30GHz, 6MB Cache, Socket 1155) is this still capable? Does it still have legs?
My GPU ASUS GeForce GTX760‑DC would I be better of just upgrading my GPU
My Ram Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL9 XMP Performance
Perhaps I should be working with what I have, any advice appreciated fellas.

Your cpu is ok if you overclock it. I always had a rule upgrade GPU first then CPU. If the CPU is bottlenecking the GPU then I would upgrade the CPU later.
Currently the Intel skylake are the ones to get as its the newest architecture. AMD are still on the old AM3+ tech so I don't recommend a AMD CPU until they change to AM4.
I5 6500 3.2 Ghz is about £175 and probably the best value mid range CPU if your not going for top range.
9 Series GPU are phasing out. I'd go with the 10 series now. I'm thinking of going with the GTX 1060 6GB myself at just under £250.

Thanks Austin, I'll think I'll overclock my cpu and just upgrade my GPU should save me a few quid. I'll check out the 1060 you mentioned. Probably go for 16Gb memory upgrade too.

Thats a good price. I've not seen cheaper. Yes there are so many brands now and variations. The one you linked is not overclocked out of the box. The turbo labelling is the fan I think. I know the strix one is overclocked so the price is higher. Check this parts picker site to compare. link

Looks like I'm sticking with Windows 7 despite being entitled to Windows 10 having taking advantage of the earlier free upgrade. Windows do have a facility for those who want to do a fresh install of 10 however the process failed every time, both on online upgrade install and with the iso install disk I've created. Microsoft have admitted problems with the latest Windows update patch this may have something to do with it.
Quite like Windows 7 I find it easier to navigate than the new version but my concerns will I suffer compatibility issues with games for running the older OS?
Are you all running Windows 10?

Windows 10 here, upgraded from 7, I prefer 7 and have modded 10 to look and feel like windows 7, compatibility for now you will be fine, in the future who knows.

Unfortunately if you want to play any of the xbox exclusives on PC you need windows 10. Like forza horizon 3 and gears of war 4.
It is the only the version of windows that supports direct x12 so you miss out on those games that require it.
I installed it not only because it was free but because windows 7 is not supported any more and I like moving forward with technology.
The gtx 1060 is fully dx12 so you won't be able to take full advantage of those features if you stay on 7.
I have no problems with 10 and I'd say it's the best version of windows I've used unlike the disaster that was 8.
If you still want to stick with 7 you could dual boot with 10.
Michael - what was the error you got during installation? If it was a blue screen then the culprit is usually the bios in my experience.

Two errors either it hangs on searching for updates (which I found a cure for) after that it's goes through all the motions then just when it seems to finish it gives me a nice little grey box saying installation fail. No reasons why just that grey box. Tried several times, live upgrade and from a iOS disk which was created for the Microsoft website both result in the same outcome. The word from Microsoft is if you did take up the free upgrade you have digital license for that product in the future, so can downgrade then up grade back to your hearts content, the reality is you can't.

If you got the license already then you can do a clean install of windows 10 instead of doing a upgrade. Unplug everything that requires a driver except keyboard and mouse. Windows 10 might be looking for a driver for a device and can't find it thus failing the install.
Your copy of the windows 10 iso might also be corrupted if you keep getting the same error. It can also fail if the system reserved partition is not big enough. It should be around 300 to 450 mb for the windows 10 setup. You can see how big the system reserved is on your hard drive by going into the disc management. Press Windows key + R and type diskmgmt.msc then hit Enter.
