Abra caddabra and like that Windows 10 was installed. Well chuffed considering the effort I've put in. The update is very picky on drivers, I did a clean install of Windows 7 on my ssd was still having problems installing in fact too many attempts to count.
After reading up on various sites explaining various problems with various solutions none of them worked but one was mentioning about drivers, as everything was unplugged the only possible conflicting driver could be the GPU one. Reinstalled my driver from dvd, didn't solve the problem so went to nvidia direct and downloaded the app which detects and automatically updates to the latest driver and hey presto booom how's your father bam it installed.
My cooler is at the post office, 1060 card still in its box so will do the upgrades on Monday my day off.
Question is 8gb memory sufficient these days? Do I need 16gb? I can get another 8 for 40 quid at Amazon.

Well done that man lol
Well 8GB is fine but more and more games are needing more and more memory to run well. One that I know of that benefits from it is Forza horizon 3. It recommends 12Gb. Might as well go 16GB then.

Should be all good for Elite now especially with an overclock?

More than ready. Ultra settings and maybe even 1440p if you've got the monitor. VR ready as well to boot.

Updated the bios on the mobo never a f-ing again. Guess what I'm doing now? Reinstalling Windows 10 had to go back to 7 because the PC wouldnt boot after bios flash. Fingers crossed I can bring it back from the dead.

Ok I'm all back, I'd have never of thought flashing the bios for the motherboard could nearly kill my PC admittedly there are warnings about flashing and failing to follow instructions could brick the system. The correct bios update was chosen and instructions followed resulting in a boot drive unassesable error, all the obvious was tried, checking boot order, checking type of drive system, achi modes raid modes no amount of tinkering seemed to help. Somehow I managed to roll back to Windows 7 just before I did my upgrade to 10. The bios didn't like Windows 10 is all I can think? Not a huge problem just now need to upgrade back Windows 10 More trouble as Windows 10 failed to install even after leaving the PC on all night it was stuck at 99% when I woke this morning, here we go again I thought., another attempt this morning and Windows 10 now installed again in fact super rapidly. So all new hardware installed along with new bios. On a plus of all this skullduggery my CPU temps are quite good with the new cooler considering it had been powered on overnight which bodes well. The Arctic silver 5 thermal paste I used has some 200 hrs bedding in before its at full effect, 180 odd now Only reason I attempted it was for the Over Clock as I wished to have latest bios for this purpose, won't be ever ever updating bios again, if it ain't broke don't try and fix it. My advice think very carefully about upgrading Motherboard bios? Is it really necessary?

I've had my fair share of problems with flashing bios a long time ago. I even managed to brick one board but I was experimenting and that never goes well. Anyway it's only worth flashing a new bios if it fixes problems your having otherwise I would leave well alone. I'm glad you fixed your problems with windows 10 Michael. You must have had a few panic attacks. It will be all worth it in the end. You'll be grinning ear to ear when you see games running on it. I'm looking to do a new gaming PC build for under 500 and I'm deciding which 1060 to go for. Maybe the Zotac mini. I want a small sized card to fit in a smaller case.

So far I've noticed no frame issues with games like "Squad"which was very jumpy on my old card, as the same with "of King and men" both smooth and set on the highest settings. Will try "Ryse son of Rome" as this was causing screen ripping on last gpu. One positive from my bios update is now over clocking is much easier now as the mobo board takes care of most of the settings for you, basically you telling it how fast you'd like the CPU. I have the 2500k running at 4.4 now temps very low with the 212 evo cooler doing an amazing job. No crashes or BSOD yet, earlier days I know. Still can't get on with Windows 10 I can't find anything

So can you max out settings on the 1060? Give Forza motorsport 6 Apex a try and tell us if you can max settings. It's free to download on the xbox app on Windows 10. It's supposed to be if you can run that at max you can run horizon 3 too. You can search for anything in Windows 10 by typing in the search bar.

Chopped it down cpu 4.0 as per advice, tbh I didn't notice any performance increase at 4.4 One thing to note the 1060 is a very long card at least mine is, has to move my mobo speak to get it in. I'll have a look for forza is it on steam
