Bollocks to it. HOTAS Thrustmaster thingy just bought from CEX for £15. Should be here in a couple of days and then I'm going to find some stuff to blow up.

Using game pad is very limiting in flight sims. The Hotas is definitely the way to play it on PC.
If you need help setting it up and if you want to wing up for some co-op bounty hunting or trading to earn some easy credits give me a shout. My commander name is Smeggers.

Is it unplayable with an Xbox controller then? Was planning on using one.
I take it the commander edition is the one to go for.

Its ok with a game pad if you can get used to the thumbsticks controlling realistic flying mechanics. The problem with using a controller, there are not enough buttons on it. You'll have to use the keyboard for alot of the functions of the spaceship. Holding a controller and taking your hand off to press a key was tiresome for me so I bought the hotas joystick. Buy from here Michael www.elitedangerous.com/The deluxe edition is the one to get as it includes the Horizon expansion. I believe you get a steam key as well but don't quote me on that but you can add it to steam as a non steam game if you wish to launch the game from there but you get a nice launcher anyway.

Just done the first mission delivering data to Cleve star port. Bought a docking computer with the proceeds. I will have a look at that joystick.
I've a lot of reading and tutorials to watch as I haven't got a clue at the moment.

Nice one. One tip I can give you. If your in supercruise and approaching stations slow to 75% throttle and you won't overshoot. The set throttle settings can be mapped to any key. 25, 50, 75 and 100. What's your commander name? I'll add you to the group. I'll link some good video tutorials to get you started making some credits. Some nice tutorials to get you started. He explains it really well, for me anyway. Bear in mind the in-game menus he shows are from an earlier build but they work the same in the latest build. Bounty hunting in a low intensity resource site i.e. any system that has asteroid rings around planets, is a good money earner to begin with. Then you can get into trading and once you have a decent amount you can start rare goods trading as its a great money earner once you can afford to. Doing missions is ok at the start but the pay is lousy for the time you put in. Stack a few missions that go to the same place or couple of jumps away from each other. Only after you increase the system faction reputation to friendly or above do you get the higher paying missions which become more profitable than trading if you know where they are. Community goals are also a good way to earn easy credits to get started. Check out Chaoswulff and Obsidian ant youtube videos as well. Some good tutorials from Chaoswulff though I find Obsidian ant's voice sends me to sleep. A few links that I use eddb.io/, ed-td.space/, inara.cz/ More fansites Apps I use on android ED Tradepad and Galnet news from the frontier I'm not sure there are iphone versions though if your on that.

I'm Dan Silvestre at the moment. Is it easy to map all the buttons - I don't get to play that often so don't want to spend hours setting up a rig! Does it automatically set itself up once you plug it in?

Scrap that, just googled it and found one that looks good.
Thanks for the offer of teaming up Bahamut, but I'm still trying to figure it all out. I think to get my money's worth out of this, i need to do it be myself. Will give you a shout if that changes.
I remember playing the original Elite as a kid, and a mate gave me a hack that made you Elite and gave you over a million credits (that was a lot in the original!). I was really excited when I loaded it up, but then felt I'd cheated and went back to the start again.
More importantly how much is a docking computer and where do I buy one?

Go to the outfitters at any place you dock. They might not all have them in stock though. They're dirt cheap - you can easily afford one with the starting wodge you get.

Thanks for that, watched one already.
Working up my bank roll, slowly getting used to things made a few quid smuggling coffee, yes coffee seriously. Over shot my destination a few times in jump speed, at what point do you disengage jump drive? I take it if you don't you keep going ?

Joshfishkins - there is a built-in profile for the thrustmaster hotas-x but some of the important ones have not been set up on the joystick for ease of use. The hat switch for instance. I've set that for manoeuvring thrusters which is very useful for combat and landing/docking. There is a in game text chat system so when your ready I'll add you to the group. You don't have to use voice comms but the voice comms is cool with crackly radio sounds overlayed on top.
Michael - set your throttle power to 75% as you approach and as soon as your under 1000km, press the hyperdrive button to disengage. You'll see a blue text warning which you've probably seen now.
Docking computers are useful especially when doing trade routes but don't rely on them. You should learn how to dock and land your spaceship because when your docking computer gets destroyed in combat your going to need that landing skill. You can't use your docking computer when landing on planets except on landing pads so learning that skill early on will help you alot in your enjoyment of the game.
