Christ, I'm still on the first level in Japan, killed my first yokai by spamming bombs at him, which made me chuckle as he'd twatted me loads before that. I am fairly shit at this, but love it anyway. Took a while to realise you're not supposed to horde the consumables like you do in Bloodborne. I also keep forgetting to use my spirit weapon thingy.

hehe I'm on the first mission in region 5 there's a level with spiders and a castle I really like did that in one go Wow your motoring through the game. I'm still finishing up the second. I've been doing all sub missions and collecting kodama's and everything. I've probably also spent too much time at the blacksmith forging stuff. Have you been skipping sub missions Mark? There lots of stuff to get in them.

hehe I'm on the first mission in region 5 there's a level with spiders and a castle I really like did that in one go I've done the spiders one and its one of my favourite missions so far. Boss wasn't too bad. Some nice hidden areas if you can call them that. I've done the icy mission and the boss is giving me some trouble. I'd say that boss is harder than the bat one. I'll get it eventually using the right buffs.

Yes weak to fire but the boss hits like a truck and spams ice at you. I ran out of elixirs after a few attempts and then I realised why they gave you a gun and lots of ammo was lying everywhere. I already had a hand cannon and ammo so I used that first and finished her with the rifle. Never even got near me. It actually became a easy boss with that strat.

I just don't get enough time - I'm still on the first proper level! I ran away from a yokai last night and just kept running through the burning village, across a beach and completely by accident opened the short cut back to the shrine. Made me laugh a lot as the yokai gave up and I could creep back across the beach and nail all the human pirates. The boss is on the boat I think as I've been everywhere else, but I chickened out of trying him last night. Any recommended level to beat him? I'm about level 8 or 9 ish.

He's not that hard to beat if you use a water buff or your weapon is high enough level to do damage that you can manage. The more damage you do the quicker he will go down. Character level is not as important as the level of your weapon and armour. Just don't get hit. A few tips I can give you is wait for an opportunity to attack. If you button mash you will get hit everytime. The best opportunity to hit him is when he's lying flat on his face. Look for the spin attack he does then hit him in the head a few times and then dodge back before he gets up. There are other opportunities to hit him and I'll leave that to you to find out. Be careful of his balls. Lol

Here's a video explaining the elements and the effects they can do.
The short version is fire does damage over time, earth slows the enemies ki regeneration, wind reduces enemy attack damage, lightning slows enemy movement and attacks and water decreases enemies defense.
Apply two of these on bosses or enemies with lots of health and they go down easy. The hard part is trying to apply them. It's worth doing though if you can.

Congrats on beating your first main boss. He's easy if your patient enough to attack at the right time. The bosses to come are either hard or easy depending on how you approach them. That's what I love about this game is that it gives you many ways to tackle the enemies. Lots of replay value and most of all lots of fun.
I too love the way they've done the mission select screen. It reminds me of Diablo 3. They've designed it like that so you can repeat missions to get smithing materials, gold, amrita, weapon armour drops and smithing texts. I have been forging weapons and armour as I level up but I now seem to be running low in wood, ingots and lacquer. They seem to run out the most than the other materials. I had to do the twilight missions a couple times to get some purple highest quality materials I needed. The twilight missions change daily.
I don't think I'll play a better game than Nioh this year. That might change if Persona 5, Torment tides of numenera, Mass effect andromeda and Nier impress me. Prey might be a surprise hit. All these games coming early this year as well.

First sub mission done, found it easy to be honest. Stumbled into the big bad pirate at the end but defeated him first time. Got loads of gear now (including the gold armour set they just released for free, although I can't wear it as its too heavy for my build). Has anyone figured out how soul matching works?

Soul matching allows you to increase the level of your weapons and armour thus increasing its rating. You can also pass on special effects to it. The special effect that has a inherit icon to the left of it. The item with the inherited special effect you want to pass on must have max familiarity. I've finished the fourth region and the Defiled Castle mission is one of my favourites. You get to fight one of the main npc's in the game and it's one of the best fights. Very tricky but fair. Parrying is your best friend.
