Here's one for you veteran johnnies. I've hardly touched combat (still harmless as I type) and last night got into my first scrape in the recently purchased Cobra Mk 3. I'd swapped the default pulse lasers for gatling gun stylee cannons, and it's also the first time I've tried them. I couldn't kill the little blighter that jumped me. I actually ran out of ammo after about 15 minutes and had to leg it.
I'm open to suggestions as to recommended loadouts. There's quite an array of kit available but I don't want to buy them one by one to see how they fare. Do things on gimbals have some sort of aim assist?

If you were using multi-cannons only then you would have a difficult time getting through their shields. Lasers are required to take down shields quickly so equipping them is a must. For the Cobra and small ships in general you would use pulse lasers and multi-cannons if it has enough slots for them. If it doesn't then laser weapons only. Lasers still do damage after you take their shields down. Equip guided missiles if you want to fire forget and have the slot for it. Make sure to put the lasers and multi-cannons on the same fire group to maximise dps. Shield cells keep you in the fight. Just remember to use them before shields go down. Gimballed and turreted weapons track the target so yes they are aim assisted. Here's a loadout I use in my combat cobra eddp.co/u/9W5T4myvP.s. And don't call me Johnny lol

Ahh sillly question time, does it matter Which wat round my lasers and cannons in the medium or small hard point slots, and before you jump in Pigmagnet I don't mean which way they point, lol Kinetic guns in the bigger slots and lasers in the small. Kinetic weapons do more damage to a ships hull than lasers which kills a ship quickly. When you get a larger ship like a python and anaconda you could have lasers in the bigger slots to bring down the shields of bigger ships and use turreted cannons to do damage while you keep firing lasers. There are other weapon types like plasma and explosive but there for larger ships and situational use. For example you can use dumb fire missiles to take out power plants from the air. Those missions are easy to do and pay alot.
