So, I downloaded this overnight and had about an hour or so playing it this morning, and first impressions is it is very good.
It is very similar to the Arkham Knight games (which is no bad thing), but with Spider-Man.
It starts with you taking out a mob-boss. This is basically the tutorial, with the game pausing to explain the buttons to you, and the bad guys getting progressively harder, culminating with a small boss fight. This fight seemed a little jarring as there were no prompts regarding entering the next phase of the battle. You obviously had to hit him in a certain way a few times, but then I think you had to let him attack you for the 3 second connecting cut scene to the next part of the battle where you got a few more grunts turn up on screen and rinse and repeat. The boss battle then ends with a few QTEs (my least favourite mechanic).
However after that, you are given a couple of minor missions to unlock parts of the game. 'Go and unscramble the map' type bits, and a slightly strange pipe dreams mini game for when you are playing as Peter Parker.
I then spent the rest of the time collecting the backpacks, doing a couple of side quest, stop the bad guy missions, and unlocking more sections of the map. All this gives you XP to unlock better skills. I am generally a button masher on these games, so I like to unlock the bits of the skill tree that will keep me alive longer before generally progressing.
Anyway, I am enjoying it. I am glad I have it, as my son will love it too, but could after an hour or so recommend it as a full price game, I'm not sure. If it was on sale, then fill your boots, but at £50, it isn't Red Dead 2 which after having Red Dead Redemption and GTA5 on day of release I would buy without thinking about it.
So definitely buy it, but without a must play online bit, you can wait a few months to save some money if you have games you are already playing ....
