Ok i'll try and make this interesting. Keith, feel free to expand on the topic in any way you see fit as I'm only going to talk/ask about HDMI and also to move it if this isn't the best board for it.
This might cover something you already know and perhaps i've just been naive but I had a conversation with an AV specialist a few weeks back that got me thinking differently about cables as I've always thought expensive cables were a waste of money.
We were getting a large (55") monitor installed at the office and he was recommending using display port, but we could also use HDMI. I asked him what his recommendation was regarding HDMI and he suggested a high speed cable. High? Speed? cable, I'd never heard of such a thing in the world of HDMI. He went on to explain that with the amount of data being sent (especially at full HD) you will notice artifacts around the edges of moving objects and pixels might show up white as the information simply isn't getting to your screen if you use a slower speed cable. He did say that you don't need to spend lots on a cable, just make sure its high speed.
After looking online I see that you can get a variety of speeds and cheaper cables don't give you any idea of what their capable of. Case in point the PS4 bundled cable doesn't give you any clues but I'm guessing its slow, still i've never thought the image quality is bad, do i simply have no frame of reference from always using cheaper cables?
OK, so whats my point/question? - what do you all use cable wise? and what do you feel is good value for money? did you know that high speed HDMI cables existed? am I just a stupid?
Lastly he recommended steering clear of any cables that have hinged connectors!

Not sure about hinged connectors, though I can see his point as moving parts are never great as they wear. I used to install and sell TV's, Home Cinema for a living, a high speed cable is a cable where the shop make a HUGE mark up on the price that is it , no other difference in my opinion. I use £5 HDMI leads from Amazon. I would though recommend a Display port lead if you can stretch to it as I have heard they do make a difference, because the way the graphics card outputs to it (sorry I do not know the technical reason) I worked for a Sony Centre and we used to sell Gold/Platinum cables and did a test, all be it with the naked eye, nothing to technical and could not see any difference apart from the commission we made from each one Speaker cables are the same, I currently use mains wire for mine as I generally found the thicker the better. you audiophiles out there feel free to correct me if I am wrong though.

Well I use a standard hdmi cable for the ps4 and never knew anything about high speed cables tbh. For the PC I use a vga cable as I seem to get a clearer picture than if I was using hdmi, but that maybe to do with the monitor I have or the graphics card I use. I know next to nothing about cabling so cant really say anymore than that

As far as I'm aware the only difference between a high speed HDMI cable and a normal one is that the high speed cable is capable of transmitting an ethernet signal at the same time as video and audio.
So theoretically if you connect your T.V to the internet via ethernet cable, any device you attach to the T.V with a high speed HDMI cable would be connected to the internet also. It's a bit like daisy chaining.
However I assume the devices would have to have a HDMI socket capable of receiving an ethernet signal, I'm not sure there are many devices that are actually capable of this at the moment.
As to whether cables make a difference to the picture I think that really depends on the quality and the size of the display. The bigger the screen the more likely you are to notice a difference. Bearing in mind a 70" T.V has the same number of pixels as a 32" T.V. So the bigger the T.V, the bigger the pixels are which makes any imperfections stand out even more.
Lastly, I use £5 cables from amazon. They have gold plated connectors and they are high speed. Some unscrupulous merchants try to sell these for £40.

Interesting, we've ordered a cheap gold plated high speed cable from amazon. If its a notable improvement over the cheap "slow" cable I might try one out on the PS4 and take some screenshots for science.

It's only SD sources, DVD's etc where you might notice a difference. Even then most people won't notice. I read about a poll somewhere asking people if they could tell the difference between the picture on a Blu-ray and a DVD, a surprisingly high percentage of people couldn't tell the difference. I Find this astonishing, after watching new films on Blu-ray most DVD's look appalling to me now. I can only assume these people have poor quality T.V's. My parents T.V for example, you can barely see any difference, but on mine it's blatant.

There was an article on the TV program Watch Dog the other night about the extortionate price PC World where charging for their HMDI cables, Basically they had an expert on saying there was absolutely no difference between a cable costing £5 and another costing £70, Then they went around a few PC World stores filming staff advising customers to buy the more expensive cables, though to their credit a few stores where honest and said there was no need to buy the more expensive one. Though I have heard the expensive once are only necessary if you’ve got a 3D telly, but that could be BS too.

I also cant watch a film unless it is in DD5.1 or higher, but maybe i have been spoilt?

I've had to give my movie collection an overhaul, some DVD's are o.k but some are abysmal. I had to go through every one of them and list the ones that had to be replaced with Blu-rays. It was a fair few!
