I like the idea of drop in co-op, as long as it can be switched off without any penalties as its not always convenient to be sociable. Destiny nailed it perfectly but needed the opportunity for larger parties, Watch Dogs though not co-op works well, it’s just a shame you can’t drop in on friends games and mess about . So I’m looking ahead to The Division with fingers crossed it can deliver some of what was promised in last years E3 trailer. As for Far Cry 4 not sure about that, I like that if you failed in 3 you can apply different tactics and it was satisfying when it worked, with two of you in co-op it would become a different game. Yeah fun at times but for the campaign I think I’d rather solo, My fear is they will ramp up the difficulty forcing you to seek help to get through the campaign.

Interesting article.
It could also have something to do with how social gaming is becoming, if you can have 2000 friends on PS4 'sharing' and chatting about what they're playing why wouldn't you want to join in on those games too!
I think your right about Destiny and Watch Dogs, they both have nice approaches to co op and competitive 'invasion' but don't quite give you enough options/settings. Hopefully future releases will recognise this and give people more freedom in how they play, I like co op as an option but I don't want to feel like I'm missing out if I choose to go solo at times.
I hope its not a fad that gets dropped from poor implementation or tagged on unnecessarily to every new release.
