Now back when I had my 360 one of my favourite experiences was playing Gears of War with a bunch of mates. Now yeah the online multiplayer side of it was fun, the tension of getting to the very end of 50 waves in horde and running round shooting your pals with a boom shot and all that.
Ahhh good times, but the best thing about it for me was the co-op campaign. Hours upon hours of experiencing the story whilst still gaming with your mates, hurling insults and other nonsense.
So enough rambling, to the point now: Is the co-op campaign a dying breed? Or am i just missing them? Does anyone prefer the way it has evolved into this mainly online multiplayer shootfest or asymmetrical 4v1 (like Evolve)? Also does anyone have any recommendations of current/future games that feature a co-op campaign?

Sadly I think your probably right it is a dying breed, there are still games like Borderlands that thrive on co-op, and to some extent Destiny gives me my co-op fix but that has a bit of everything and is open world and isn’t so story driven. When the first Rainbow 6 came out on the original Xbox I spent hours with mates working through the co-op campaign, and I’m not to sure did the early Goats Recons have co-op too? I Know GR had big maps where a squads of 12 would work through the map taking out the AI, that was fun on the harder difficulties. There was also Halo 2/3/4 etc but not sure if they were ever 4 player I think it was only 2. But today’s games are either a meaty single player only campaigns like wolfenstein and now Metro, or the run of the mill online with a half hearted campaign tacked on. I think one of the recent Killzone Shadow Fall updates added co-op missions but that’s still not a full campaign. Evolve is a good concept, Devs seam to be doing there best to find new ways to do multiplayer, but that’s not a reason to forget a the old Faithfull’s like co-op. Sad days.

Far Cry 4's co-op approach looks interesting though and also Diablo has a good system with being able to link up no matter what the lvl of the chr. also the nemesis system has really come into it's own now more friends are playing it, have beaten a couple now I also think with the new PS4 share system in the new patch will encourage developers hopefully to try more inventive things with there games.

I love a game with a good meaty story, so most fps games just don't cut it. I want to try Diablo but just not willing/able to spend £55 on it at the moment!
Destiny/Evolve put me off due to a feeling of impending DLC avalanche. I mean would TLOU been good with a friend playing as Ellie? Would they have to be restricted a little on what they can do so as not to overpower? I mean she doesn't really get armed till late on, so would they be melee only till later? I dunno, is it asking too much?
But imagine playing Dragon Age, friend comes online (notification of that would be nice Sony!) and they can drop in as one of your party members.

Did anyone play Kane and Lynch that could be played co-op my mrs actually played that all the way through with me on split screen, as she did with The Lord of the rings games on ps2, army of two was another, conflict series set in the gulf war. All these games my mrs played, and she hates gaming and for me games made better playing co-op, even despite her wonky aiming.

Does co-op require a meaty story? if with mates then you make your own journey as you play, I only played the first Gears of War and I couldn’t begin to tell you what the story was. Dragon Age Origins totally absorbed me in the characters and story, if that was co-op and a mate turned up in place of Morrigan it would have killed the atmosphere, and if any game had an avalanche of dlc then that was one. Dlc is going to be unavoidable this gen, you can choose to take or leave it, but if it gives me a good sizable chunk of story then I don’t mind, but if its ever pay to win then forget it. Good topic btw.

I think co-op does require a good story, it's what drags you in and keeps you invested, making you come back for more. Cut scenes and character dialogue are still going to be there, however the AI is replaced by a human. So i can't see it impacting on the story/atmosphere as you'd have to play to the strengths of the character you controlled anyway, so no melee with mages etc. Although the 'romance' options in the bioware games might get a little....weird.
DLC is for me something that needs to take a good hard look at itself and reassess. Things like Blood Dragon for Far Cry, fine but overpriced map/weapon packs and skins just feel like a waste. How much of this was planned to be left out before release for day 1 DLC, season passes, raising level caps etc. I'm done with all that.
/rant
I guess I miss playing games with mates where we all enjoy the story/setting etc we went through all the Gears games (took a whole day off work for each one so we could co-op the campaign!) I think the enjoyment from the story and the fun we had kept us playing the multiplayer for longer i think.

I still like a good single player game/story/experience but can't deny that some of my fondest gaming memories are from playing co-op or competitively with friends.
It just seems like its a different landscape today, in the retro remakes thread i was thinking of games like contra, double dragon and streets of rage that were simple player 2 drop in fun but just as good solo.
I played some fps multiplayer on PC but never really got into console multiplayer until Mass Effect 3 which was just an add on but was hugely entertaining and had a great community and was purely co-op. I thought the co-op in Dead Space 3 looked interesting but was never able to try it out so was left feeling like i'd missed out on a chunk of the game. Destiny is fun as its as good to play solo as it is to play with friends (or even pugs)
If its a fun extra that does't lock out any of the game if you don't play it i actually hope we see more co-op options but you make good points about DLC, I hate the idea of pay to win and even the whole - micro transactions to speed up progress - could be discussed/ranted about at length in its own thread.
