I just tried reading posts on a new machine where I wasn't logged in. I was surprised to see the GE clan pages (Destiny, DriveClub etc.) aren't displayed if you don't login (I traverse using the drop down menu).
I get why we don't let anyone read those unless they sign up, but on the other hand, they are pretty much the only place on the site which is posted to. The rest of the site can be a bit of a ghost town of non - activity, so if anyone is simply browsing without signing up, the site can look a little dead.
Not entirely sure what to do about it, but others may have suggestions. As more and more games are forcing people online all of the time, I'm guessing there will be more clans and more people posting in this hidden area.

It's a fine line mate, we want people to sign up but if they have access to everything why the need?? maybe we need a section to promote the site with benefits to signing up i.e. what is locked and what is not?
This point has come up many times between the mods and different things have been tried, we decided on the current approach to be the best, unless anyone can think of a better solution that works....

Like Keith says it indeed is a fine line, and really down to two just two options completely open to visitors (downside plenty of lookers but not many joiners) or part restricted access to visitors while members have complete access, clan areas are for members (incentive to join)
We tried open access during our early stages of the forum and we felt that it did very little to encourage new joiners. Membership is very un taxing with just an email address, password and a little intro in the introductions page.
Should we open up again to visitors, Stay as we are, What do people think?

I originally set up the clan board so it was visible to guests, but they couldn't access the threads.
That way visitors can see what we have on the site but they can't pry into private areas. I felt if people could at least get an idea of the kind of content we have it might encourage them to join. Keeping the threads member access only helps to avoid randoms trying to join our clans.
I wasn't even aware someone had changed it to be completely invisible.

Ok I see now it's completely gone when not logged in, should be visible but restricted. Needs changing then, I'll have look at settings later.

Visitors should now be able to view the content but not make any posts does that sound right? Suggestions?

I think that sounds about right. They can read but if they want to contribute, let them sign up.
While I'm here, I think it would be worthwhile looking at reducing the number of boards. There are currently more boards than active posters, and as Edd says, most of the activity is currently in one place. Just an old fart's opinion of course but I think that makes the place look like a ghost town, rather than the cool hangout we all know it is. I'd been here a couple of weeks before I even knew there was a shout box, you have to scroll so far down to see it.

hmmm reduce the amount of boards, I will ask the others if a little cull is needed on the boards, but on a casual scroll most have recent posts, ok not at the rate as the hot topic games. We try to populate the boards as much as pos, Keith, Rich and Ian do an excellent job updating the forum by adding regular updates in the various sections. Austin has taken up the reigns on the destiny board.
If I remember right we looked into having the shout box at the top but it wasn't possible to do so. thanks for your suggestions.

We could maybe cull a few boards that don't get used, maybe we need a poll on what ones should be kept ect.?

We struggle with xboxone but that's not to saying we should get rid of it just need to attract some xbox players. Also need to grow the pc players as only a few who game on pc. Perhaps concentrate on ps4 Xbox one and pc. Maybe ps vita can have a sub section on ps? A poll would be a good idea, out of our members perhaps only half that number regularly visit us so a group email will be needed for those votes.
Poll is now up.

Bringing up paying locations again, we seem to be posting multi platform game information in the ps4 area.
I have just replied to the Alien Isolation thread, but that is hidden in the ps4 area, and should be in the general forum I would guess.

It difficult as it belongs in xbox,pc and ps4 threads, so I put it in the PS4 thread because that is what the majority of us have, otherwise we will have multiple threads all over the place, or we start another board for multi platform games??? but dont erally see the point, I use the search function nowadays if I want to find a post about a game seems quicker.
Keith.
