I really can't understand all the flak it's getting. It has big flaws certainly, and some silliness, but on the whole it was worth it. I think Kylo Ren is developing very well, Adam Driver is delivering the best acting by far in a series that has never been known for outstanding performances - you won't find better in any of the originals, not even from Alec Guinness. I know of at least one lurker here who will disagree with me on Kylo and Driver, but he has a gamertag that sounds like a girl's name in French, on which I rest my case. I'm quite looking forward to watching it again.
I think your mileage with SW these days, particularly to old farts like us, depends how much you like the originals. I saw Star Wars on release and it was great fun, but I wouldn't put it in a list of greatest films. ESB was good but overrated, ROTJ less so. None of them were cinematic masterpieces, and in the run up to the first of the shit prequels they somehow developed this mythical status all out of proportion to how good they actually were. It's cowboys in space, knights in armour rescuing princesses, Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers space operas. You watch any other film you don't like and it's just 'well I didn't like that, it was shit' but if a SW film goes off in a direction you don't like, you start bleating about your childhood being raped. Not an OTT reaction at all. (That's just the general reaction of social media twats and not a dig at you Paul - we agree more than we disagree about films, and your taste is almost as cool as mine).
I think all the last three films are doing okay, and have nowt to be ashamed of when held up against the originals - on the whole. The pros more than make up for the cons.

I liked rogue a lot, but rotj lost credibility for me when a certain oriental lady who worked in maintenance or whatever was suddenly a superb pilot in anything they put her in, if she was that good why did the resistance have her technically cleaning toilets?

Hostiles.
Yet another fillum from last year that should have got big awards but didn't. Injun-hatin' Christian Bale is the army chap tasked with escorting one of his mortal enemies (that vicious cunt from Last of the Mohicans) to his homeland to die, because he's not well. Pretty grim in tone (but still funnier than a Ferrell comedy), and possibly Bale's best work. Paul, I think you'll appreciate this one.

I didn't read any reviews until I'd seen it and I'm surprised at some of the negativity in the stuff I'm now reading. A lot of peeps didn't get what they expected - Sorry I'm amongst the didn't get what they expected group, I'd waited a long time to see Dunkirk but consider the 1h 43m to have been a waste of my time, yes it was nice how the 3 stores eventually linked, but by then I'd lost interest, I feel a bit guilty not having liked it because of the subject, but I didn't get the fear and trepidation and complete feeling of helplessness that those poor sods must have felt.

This is next on my watch list. Might enjoy it more with low expectations.

I nearly punched myself in the face after I watched your last recommendation though. (Annihilation)

Aah, you made my day Ace. You watch fillums I recommend. Do Brawl in Cell Block 99 next. Don't be put off by Vince Vaughan, he's good in this. I warn you it takes its time though, but it's a good script and there's some top-drawer violence in it.

Btw I saw Ready Player One a couple of weeks ago, was not expecting to like it but I did, there were a lot of references to older games and films that completely went over the heads of the younger audience I watched it with witch mad me feel quite smug, and the ending Easter egg was something I remember doing myself and had forgotten about so was super smug at the end.
Recommended to older gits, just grin and bear the first half hour.
