Star Trek Into Darkness. Star Wars fans, you'd better hope the new one has a decent script because if JJ Abrams directs Star Wars like he does Star Trek it's going to nothing but one long, lazy, and dull slam-bang actionfest. While I wouldn't go so far as to call myself a Trekkie I do have a soft spot for the original series, and Spock is one of the best characters in fiction, on screen or in a book. There are just some things you shouldn't tinker with and Spock is one of them. Now he has lover's tiffs with Uhura. No no no no no! And Kirk is just a sports jock who's into threesomes. There is no way they'd trust this brat with a command.
Trek films are always a mixed bag and while this one is by no means the worst (it hasn't got Deanna Troi in it) it's really just one generic action sequence after another, with everyone but the ship's cat hanging off some sort of crumbling superstructure at some point. You get to the point where you just want it to end - and it keeps on going. Ironically, the big baddie Cabbagepatch would make a brilliant Spock.

So far I’ve had two Netflix attempts at watching this, fortunately it starts again from where I left off as not made it past half an hour yet.
I’m quite a fan of proper Star Trek and the original set of films, I still think the idea of the Voyager probe returning with improved Ai is one of the best Science Fiction plots. But I’m finding these prequels shallow, when I watched the original trilogy at the cinema and Spock died I had man tears every day until the next film came out, actually now I think of it Spock’s resurrection due the terraforming was a bit crap but I ignored that at the time, As for the new younger crew I dont give a stuff what happens to them, they had some big boots to fill and thay ain't fillin em.

They're not all bad. I like McCoy, he's spot on as a younger version of old Bones. For me the best bits of the original was the interplay between the leads. I used to love it when Spock and McCoy wound each other up. And under the cardboard 60s sets there are some damned good scripts. But the latest films are going the same way as the Marvel cookie-cutter output. It's just playing with software and getting everyone to shout. I'm really lowering expectations for the new Star Wars. To be fair, all you have to do to get the fanboys sticking to their seats is have the old farts wave light sabres around - or indeed just have Solo say 'Chewie, we're home' - and I'm worried that the new crew will think that's enough. Expectations were sky-high for the prequels - I mean, what could possibly have gone wrong, it was Star Wars!!! Then The Phantom Menace turned up.

Oh here I go you’ve got me started…
I'm not expecting anything good to come from The Force Awakens, I was interested to see the original leads back but after seeing that clip of a wrinkly Solo I'm now not so sure. All three of the prequels were a disappointment and if we're honest Jedi wasn't all that ether, but it had the original cast and wrapped up the story nicely so it’s forgiven. I say leave it there, What will it say about the film industry when we have a couple of jewels and a rough diamond made 20 odd years ago bookended by film cheese in the inevitable nine DVD box set.

I wasn't really too interested in the the recent Star Wars films, I think I've only seen the one where the boy darth vader races a hover thingy. Love the originals though.

Two this weekend (no beer for some godforsaken reason): Avengers - excellent and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Don't know what I was thinking with the second one, but it really is total crap. How they can spend that much money on a film that doesn't make sense, has no identifiable or likeable characters and is edited so fast that you can't follow it anyway is just beyond me. How Michael Bay keeps getting paid is the biggest mystery of the 21st century, and we're only 15 years in.

Watched interstellar a few weekends ago, did not know much about it and thought it was a big all action sci-fi epic, not that at all, still pretty good though even if the story was pretty far fetched, the effects are top notch and the sound in AC3 was spectacular. Worth a watch - warning it is pretty long though!!

Manhunter. The first (and best) appearance of Hannibal Lecter. After this he got Hopkinsed, which was admittedly fine to begin with, but got more like a 'he's behind you!' panto baddy as he progressed. Now of course he's a tv franchise. But Manhunter's still the best he's been.

Wild Tales.
I watched this last night and it's one of the best I've seen so far this year. It's a collection of 6 shorts on a revenge theme. You know how in this sort of thing there is usually at least one crap one? Well these are all excellent. Very dark, occasionally bloody and often bloody hilarious. I'd recommend it heartily and will buy the blu when it drops a bit (it's a new release).
Oh, and it's Argentinian, so they all talk in jibber-jabber, but there are words along the bottom of the telly so you can work out what they're saying.

I watched Gone in 60 seconds last Monday. Love that film especially as I am a total petrolhead.

Oh! The original is a petrohead's wet dream. It's the mecca of car chase films. Truth be told it's not a great film but it's essential viewing - basically a car nut filmed a terrific car chase (it lasts about 40 minutes) then cobbled together a film round it with no budget or professional actors. I'm a sucker for good auto action and in fact I want to go home and watch this again.
