From someone who’s played Next.
I’m more intrigued than hyped, interested to see what they have managed to do, think I’ll have to give it a spin over the weekend to refresh my memory of how it looks now.

We'll have to have a jaunt around a few planets next week.

Nice to see some optimism assuming the servers will be up to it.

I'm looking forward to it, and think I might start from scratch. Not bothered about the middle of the galaxy thing, so I think I'll just be a chilled space-drifter. I like the idea of getting a freighter for free, and I still haven't tried the ground vehicle. There's obviously a lot more depth in it now, and the pain-in-the-arse resource collecting has been streamlined.

Started a new pre-next update game so I can do a direct comparison, very underwhelming probably due to the rubbish planet I’ve been dumped on, and can’t say I’ve noticed the beginning to be any more user friendly than the original, your still dumped next to a wrecked ship with no memory of past life and not a lot of clue as to what to do next.
I can see why a lot of people were put off at the beginning, I think I was lucky with my original start planet as it was colourful and lush with a friendly atmosphere, don’t know why I left it was downhill from then on.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow but I’m not getting my expectations up.

Got right back into it last night, I walked over a hill on my boring planet to find a huge crashed destroyer or frater smoking away in the distance, havent explored it yet it’s too far to walk and I can’t wander to far from my ship as the atmosphere is hostile, so need to finish repairing my ship first, I’m already starting to roll play already, was this the destroyer that shot me down?
I’m hoping it’s still there after the update.

It's nearly 10GB - that's almost twice the size of the vanilla game; getting it now. I had a quick pre-update look earlier, and the PS4 really sounded like a jet engine. If it's that loud I probably won't be able to play this.

I like the new beginning, it did take me a while before I noticed it was telling me what to do bottom right of the screen, (very small writing and my telly’s huge) I was dumped on an ice planet with life support quickly dropping and no ship in sight to get out of the cold, fortunately I knew to run to a small cave nearby to stop myself freezing to death, I then got poisoned inside the cave but managed to survive anyway, I’ve got as far as leaving the planet following a distress beacon and landing on a nearby planet, where I’ve learnt to build a small wooden shack that despite its flimsy appearance survives storms, (like the new clouds btw) my next task is to explore the planet for hidden treasure.
It’s a huge improvement on the base game, don’t know where or when you get to customise your character, I’m still stuck in the orange space suit a spawned in, and it’s a faff to switch from third to first person, I did read that PS4 was experiencing performance drops so I locked my fPs and set it to offline, didn’t want anyone spoiling my fun while I was deciphering the tiny text, though easily fixed by moving the sofa closer to the telly.
Overall a big thumps up and I’ve only literally scratched the surface, don’t know if it’s the game we were expecting two years ago but it’s definitely something I’m going to be pouring a few more hours into.

I started a new one and was put in 3rd person. I prefer the new fixy-fixy - instead of just repairing something you have to repair the specific bits that don't work, which makes it more of a faff I suppose, but it does make it feel as though you're getting more involved with the workings. And the elements don't all look the same which is a big improvement - instead of scanning the planet for clumps of sodium you can find it in different sources. I think in the long run that'll work much better and things shouldn't look as if they've been built from a construction kit - they have of course, but it shows it less now. Someone joined my game while I was still fixing my ship, and I don't know if you can turn that off. He bopped along and landed near me and don't know if he tried to communicate or not. And I'm assuming he was a he as he had a spacesuit on, not a dress. I jumped up and down a bit but I'd just done my repairs and was eager to hop in and fly off, which I did. I was put in first person while flying - how to you change viewpoints?
I did have one sudden disconnect but apart from that didn't notice any performance issues. I also put D2 on to do a weekly flashpoint but the connection was very flaky and i was beginning to wonder if the problem was at my end.
Anyway - flew off-planet to the first beacon so we're probably roughly in the same place even though we could be at opposite ends of the galazy. I haven't built a hut though. What time do you get on? If you choose multi at the first menu you get a list of chums playing, so it looks easy to join up.

I'll join you if I see you, I don’t know if my ship comes with me I assume it does, but not sure how the save will work when I log back in will I be on your planet or mine? To faff (must be word of the week) to first person, from memory down on d pad, scroll along left to cog thing then up, if in ship you will get a ship icon if walking about you get a figure icon.
I changed to 3rd (ship) person while flying and was so thrown by the change of perspective I immediately slammed it nose first into the ground.

I cracked and bought it. Took me a while to get to grips with it but I did find it quite enjoyable. So I got my ship fixed, went to next planet and started a base, then flew off to find a space station. I wasn't very impressed with it, don't know what I was expecting but I'd hoped for more than a few shops.
I then started getting a bit of buyers remorse. I'm still not sure what the actual point of the game is. Is it just gathering materials and crafting?

I'm still not sure what the actual point of the game is. Right now, neither am I. At launch the overall aim was to get to the centre of the universe, which Hello didn't expect anyone to do so fast. On the way you were just supposed to explore. You can do so much more now - build bases, freighter fleets, and you can build racecourses for your ground vehicles - none of which I've yet done. I think it's supposed to be a chilled exploring experience at heart, and that's how it should be approached. There is space combat in it, but if you're looking for a space shooter or just something more action-oriented, it's probberly not de game for you. I'm fine with chilled exploration as long as there are things to discover, and I'm hoping the three big expansions since launch have put that sort of stuff in.
I still got plenty hours out of it at launch, and I expect to get a lot more now. It's had a lot of polish and input since then, but it'll probably always lose to Elite if all you do is compare space stations. I got bored with Elite fast (unexpectedly) so I'm still on the lookout for a good spacey game. I can do chilled exploring.
